Last year the Chicago Tribune produced a list of the top 10 essentials no kitchen should be without. And for foodies and others who have even a passing culinary education it probably comes as no surprise that owning a chef’s knife topped the list.
That’s because while those who have culinary school experience take it for granted, many people don’t know how much can be done in a kitchen with this amazing tool and the proper technique.
Culinary School 101
As those who have even a passing culinary education can tell you, using the proper techniques for chopping, dicing and slicing not only can make a difference in food preparation, but if you have good knife skills, the kind you learn attending culinary school, you can eliminate most kitchen gadgets. Maybe that’s why so many chefs find many of today’s latest kitchen gadgets irrelevant. In fact, some chefs, according to the Chicago Tribune, find such items as garlic presses, vegetable peelers, and even egg and apple slicers entirely useless. Instead many of these top chefs preferred using their chef knives and good, old-fashioned food preparation techniques, rather that using a fancy kitchen gadget to get the job done.
Sharpen Your Skills with a Culinary Education
While there’s no doubt that using your favorite kitchen gadgets can be fun, if you’re looking to make a career in the culinary arts, attending culinary school is really the best place to sharpen your skills with a chef’s knife as well as other essential cooking tools. In addition to learning the multitude of ways you can utilize a chef’s knife, by getting a solid culinary education you’ll also learn the appropriate techniques for preparing a variety of cuisines.
If you’re thinking about pursing a culinary career, attending culinary school is one sharp way to get ahead!
