It's a good idea to begin your animation career with training and a degree from a respected school. A formal education in animation will give you skills and help you build a portfolio to show prospective employers when you're ready to enter the workforce. One of the major components of will give you computer skills, as many animated movies, commercials and shows are now created almost exclusively on a computer. Most animators learn both 2-Dimentional and 3-Dimensional techniques. Even though most animation is now 3-d, it continues to utilize 2-D skills such as life-drawing, composition, and proportion. These skills form the foundation for 3-D animation, which adds the technological component, often in the form of computer programs. In 3-D animation, you'll deal with technicalities like lighting and texture.
Within the field of animation you can choose to specialize and become a layout artist, creating the backgrounds for animated scenes, or an inbetweeners, creating filler scenes for in between key action. You can also become a storyboard artist, translating a script into a storyboard sequence that can then be animated. You'll have a great degree of creative control as a storyboard artist, planning shots and directing inbetweeners and layout artists to ensure a smooth story flow.
